The Chapter had its annual participation in the Armed Forces Day Ceremonies at the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial in Baton Rouge, LA. May 15th 2010. Willie Stephens gave the Benediction. Jim McCurry was Master of Ceremonies and Henry Cook who gave the Keynote Address both lamented the lack of public turnout saying “ The Nation is at war, but American’s aren’t, they’re at the Mall”. Attendees included; local MOPH Cdr Rick O’Brien & ViceCdr Tommy Jenkins, Marine Corps League Chaplain Woodrow Craft, ViceCmdt Bob Finley and Marion Lee, SFC Dwayne Joseph of the LANG Job Challenge Program and twenty teenage youth members, and former US ARMY SGT Joe Jenkins a Silver Star recipient. Also present were BLUE STAR MOTHERS, Karen Wright and Janice Cook who every three months mail about 125 large PO boxes containing “goodie Items” for our service members in the combat zones. NOTE, Karen’s son SPC Kleyn is now in Iraq – he’s Jim McCurry’s grandson. See Photo for members present.
On June 5th members were on hand when SFC Gregory Stube (An SF Medic severely wounded in Iraq 2006) spoke of his experience. This was part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration of WW2 at The National WW2 Museum in New Orleans, LA. SFC Stubes presence was arranged by Mrs. Phyllis Taylor (of Taylor Energy Co) who is a patriotic friend and supporter of Chapter XXX. Following the ceremonies, SFC Stube, his pilot/friend Ben Baker, Jim Anthony with Bob & Judi Moreau shared a drink at the museum’s bar – Henry Cook and J.J. Witmeyer joined in. Other members & friends present were; Willie Stevens, Tom Tubesing, Bill & Quetha VomWeg, Lee & Ruby Roberts and Mrs. Taylor (hope I didn’t miss anyone). SFC Stube was thrilled to meet the three Very Lovely Young Ladies of the museum’s THE VICTORY BELLES who entertained the audience with songs from the WW2 era. The ladies surprised three old veterans when taking a picture (See Photos).
Saturday, July 24th our quarterly meeting was at a new location – SARITA’S CANTINA in ST AMANT, LA. The Mexican food buffet was excellent which everyone enjoyed. When the business part was concluded a few members spoke, among them; HENRY COOK who recommended we become involved with activities such as; a) a legislative committee to discuss with elected officials on issues affecting veterans, AD military and their families, b) re-involvement with ROTC & JROTC programs, and c) assist deployed units and other SF projects by partnering with an organization already doing this, SOLDIERS ANGELS: JOHN HURTH (see ) asked for volunteers willing to assist the SOTD at JRTC Ft Polk, LA. on SOF training exercises in local Louisiana areas. Willie & Mike remarked we had done so a few years ago – twice. President Fred Dent Jr. stated we will appoint a committee(s) (several members signed-on with John).
