Chapter XXX had another interesting quarter. On New Year’s Eve, Dec 31, 2008 several members attended a party at the home of Jim & Mitzi Anthony in LaPlace, LA. The guests all brought a dish or two plus Mitzi had already cooked; Gumbo, Cabbage w/Black Eyed Peas plus a couple other dishes along with several bottles of wine and champagne. It sounds like too much food right ? yes it was and everything was delicious. Fireworks were ignited in the back yard (close to the canal) with everybody enjoying the spectacle (despite the cold weather).
On Saturday January 24th 2009 at 1100 hrs we held our quarterly meeting at the brand new South East Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve, LA. This is an excellent fully service facility for the 100 plus elderly Veterans in residence. We had lunch in the cafeteria after all the Veterans had eaten, having the same food and it was very good – some members had “seconds”. The business part of our meeting consisted of the usual; minutes of the previous meeting, treasurer’s report, old business etc. We then discussed some future activities. Jim McCurry talked about two events; first was May 17th Armed Forces Day Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Baton Rouge, LA. next was the November 11th Induction Ceremony of the Louisiana Veterans Hall of Honor at the Louisiana Memorial Museum in Baton Rouge. One of the nominees is CPT Marvin Roberts who served in the LA National Guard with many of our Chapter XXX members. CPT Roberts was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for distinguished service in Viet Nam. He is also in the Ranger Hall of Fame.
Bob Moreau spoke about the status of our Annual HELP HOST A HERO FOR MARDI GRAS 2009 program. The information flyer was updated and improved over last years. Fund Raising is progressing, several donations received and several more pledged. A major local corporation has agreed to become a Major Sponsor to support the Combat Veterans of the GWOT to ride in the parade.
West Summers talked about his being a member of the LIBERTY JUMP TEAM That jumps from C-47 Aircraft ! jumping both in Europe and the US. The team has 80+ members and growing, consisting of both men and women…Active Duty, Reserve, Retired and Foreign Military from several countries.
