Our quarterly meeting was on Saturday January 25th 2014 in New Orleans, LA at the Louisiana National Guard facility Jackson Barracks, which contains the State HQ, support facilities and several unit armories. The barracks is a very historic site, founded by the US Army in 1835 and in 1920 was transferred to the LA NG. In July 1959 a Special Forces unit was activated, Co D 20th SFGA that was deactivated in May 1972. Chapter XXX has 28 members who are former members of this unit. The Louisiana National Guard Military Museum is developing a history of former units and several of our members have given oral histories, donated old uniforms, old equipment and other artifacts. One such item was the Co D “PROP BLAST MUG” upon which are engraved the names of all those who were “Blasted”. The meeting was held at this facility and when it was adjourned a tour of the museum was conducted by its Director, CPT Heather Englehart and the Historian Rhett Breerwood.
The meeting was called to order at 1100 hrs by VP Art Zieske, invocation by John Persson, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a Treasurer’s Report. Bob Moreau gave a status report on our annual program “Host A Hero For Mardi Gras 2014” with the parade held on March 4th 2014, see our website for details. Art Zieske spoke on pending legislation “Eliminate Concurrent Receipt of Retirement Pay and Disability Compensation for Disabled Veterans” and the negative implications for all veterans. A delicious lunch was catered on site by Arabi Food Store & Café, If you enjoy good ole fashioned home style cooking this is the place for you.
