On Saturday January 23rd 2016 the Quarterly Meeting was held at a new location, AMERICAN LEGION POST 397, 1225 Hickory Avenue, Harahan, LA. (a suburb of New Orleans, LA.) The hospitality by members of this post was excellent thanks to Larry Jones, Ken Demarest and Claude Otto. We appreciate the Post Commander Nancy Lee McDaniel for allowing us to hold our meeting there. The meeting began with swearing in of the new officers for years 2016-2017. (see photo)
The meals at our meetings are always great but this time the regular caterer of the Post was “over-the-top”. The RED WAGON GROCERY & CATERING had great food with the Roast Beef Debris w/gravy being Exceptionally Delicious! Almost everyone had a second helping.
After our business portion of the meeting we had two Guest Speakers
First was member Morty Hurston who talked about a project he’s undertaken on the possible burial of some military equipment during WW2 on the grounds of Camp Claiborne, LA. (long since closed) located about 40 miles east of Ft. Polk, LA. The items involved are tanks, half-track vehicles, trucks, jeeps and even P-40 fighter planes in their original shipping crates. No paperwork acknowledging this has ever been found. The Forest Service in Louisiana was contacted on this about ten years ago but flatly said no, they didn’t see it in the interest of the federal government. Morty has visited the site several times in the past two years and found three long elevated areas and discovered berms covered with trees and brush. He also hired a Houston firm, Ground Radar Systems that showed five objects (automobile size) in a 100 foot long area on top of one berm. A lengthy article on this was published on November 7th 2015 in the Baton Rouge newspaper THE ADVOCATE. http://theadvocate.com/ Morty will shortly have another meeting with the forest officials and hopefully be allowed to pursue this matter and conduct an excavation.
Second was Larry Jones a Retired USCG Commander who belongs to several veteran’s organizations and is an Advocate for the Veterans Administration assisting veterans with disability claims. He gave a lot of information about 1) the new VA Hospital in New Orleans 2) VA Benefits in general 3) medical access and 4) the relatively new VA “Choice Card”. After the meeting a few members talked with him further concerning possible disability claims.
The Annual MARDI GRAS PARADE was on Tuesday February 9th, 2016, it was parade number FIFTEEN ! We invite twenty or so Combat Veterans of the mid-east conflicts, raising money to finance it by donations from patriotic individuals and organizations. For more info see our website www.sfa30.org and click on the MARDI GRAS LINK. This year the riders were 16 US Army soldiers, 5 USCG and 5 Chapter XXX Members. (see photo).
Members present; MANNY, JIM & MITZI, ERNEST, RUSS, TONY L, JACK, MIKE, MORTY, RICHARD, JIM & KATHY, RON, BOB & JUDI, LESTER, LLOYD, DAVE & BECKY and ART.
