The Our meeting on Saturday April 27th 2013 started off differently than any others. First of all “Some Guys” (we won’t mention WHO) couldn’t find the restaurant, SAMMY’S GRILL in Prairieville, LA. They were in the neighborhood but just couldn’t “see” the place, had to call others on their cell phones for the location. Secondly our meeting room’s air conditioner was OUT ! But member Ernie Bryant Is an a/c repairman and was in his truck so he offered to fix it for them. He shortly had the a/c unit up and running and in true “SF Spirit” didn’t charge the restaurant. The manager was very grateful and gave us a nice discount on the catering charges.
Lunch was served at noon with members choosing from a menu of four selections and everyone got their choice and enjoyed the meal. The meeting was then called to order by President RUSS COPPING then the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Chaplain WILLIE STEVENS with the invocation. Next guests were introduced, previous meeting’s minutes approved, treasurer gave a report and without any old business to resolve, the floor was open for new business.
ERNIE BRYANT presented more details on the upcoming May 25th Memorial Day Celebration at the Clinton Cemetery in Coleman, LA. We have several members who will participate as well as members from SFA Chapter 81 and the 82nd Airborne Association (from the Lafayette, LA area).
ERNIE MAYEAUX and his wife LUOI were here visiting from their home in Thailand. Ernie will have a garage sale next weekend (May 4 & 5) to clear out his house in Baton Rouge, getting put up for sale. They will be going back to their home in Thailand. We’ll all miss them but certainly wish them well.
Next three areas of interest to veterans were discussed. Guest CSM DEL HOSKINS spoke of a USO being set up in the New Orleans Airport. It will assist service members with needs while they’re in the airport, either arriving or departing. The CSM also talked about an upcoming national program named HIRING A HERO. Also a program to help returning veterans acclimate themselves back into civilian life. It will involve the; VA, VFW, American Legion, Red Cross and National Guard Units. ERNIE MAYEAUX spoke about the Foreign Medical Program (FMP) for those veterans living outside the USA. TOM FIERKE talked about his VFW Post 8973’s program “Veterans Helping Veterans” with the older ones acting as mentors to the young ones. His post also has a policy that all officers are 40 years old or younger. It also offers a job and resume writing course for returning veterans.
There being no more items to discuss the meeting was adjourned at 1344 hours. Members and Guest present were; Jim & Mitzi Anthony, Billy & Joyce Bean, Ernie Bryant, Russ Copping, Tom Fierke, Ed Gainey, CSM Del Hoskins, Morty Hurston, Earl & Joanne LeBlanc, Ernie & Luoi Mayeaux, Jim & Kathy McCurry, Bob Moreau, Lester Poirrier, Tony & Sandy Riddle, Willie Stevens, Lloyd & Lustella Stout, Owen Wall, Bill Waters and Art Zieske.
