On Saturday October 23rd we held our quarterly
meeting at CRIS MANDRY’S boathouse in the New Orleans Marina. It began
at 1100 hrs with an invocation, pledge of allegiance and a few moments
of silence for all the fallen service members. Steve Grimm stated for
the record that our President FRED DENT JR passed away on September
12th. Therefore as VP he assumed the position of President. Tony Riddle
volunteered to serve as Acting VP until the next elections. The
membership approved both these actions by acclimation. Introductions
were made for those members attending their first meeting; Tom Fierke,
Mykel Hawkeye and Dave & Becky Thibodeaux. Also Bob Nissley’s five
guests; Joy Pecoraro, Kim & Antoine Saacks and Bette & Bill Bruhmuller –
President of the Northwest Florida Chapter of the UDT/SEAL Assoc.
Steve then talked about FRED being a great husband, father, green beret
and friend to so many people. He read some recollections of FRED by a
very close friend, JOSEPH GRAY, MG USA (RET). A few other members spoke
of their Fond memories with FRED. Steve then presented to FRED’S widow,
LIZ DENT a plaque from the SFA and said to her “you are still one of us
and always welcome”.
CHAPTER XXX IS THIRTY YEARS OLD! John Whidden and Tony Levata
talked about the ‘early days’. It was noted that several of the Charter
Members are still active. A copy of THE DROP issue of December 1980 with
our Article on the first Chapter XXX Meeting on September 20th 1980 was
Tony Riddle informed everyone that the Chapter is now on
FACEBOOK and our website has a link to it. Members can access and post
their stories and photos.
Russ Copping is redesigning our Chapter Coin and asked if anyone had any
suggestions. A few members did present ideas. The new coin will be done
in the next few weeks.
The Chapter had received two requests for financial assistance. 1) J.J.
Witmeyer for the November 11th Parade being held by the Greater New
Orleans Veterans Council. 2) Commanding Officer of the 2/20th SFG (A) MS
NG for a family picnic this December to welcome home their soldiers from
Afghanistan. A motion was made, seconded and approved. The Treasurer
prepared the checks.
A number of Chapter members commissioned in the 1960s through
the LA NG OCS at Camp Beauregard, LA attended a BBQ on August 27th
celebrating the school’s FIFTIETH Anniversary; Morty Hurston, Bob
Moreau, West Summers and Maxwell Swinger. Also other SFers; Robert
Ammons, Charley Baldock, Jim McCall and John McInnis.
Jim Anthony, Bob Moreau and Lloyd Stout have started raising
the $15,000.00 required for our HELP HOST A HERO FOR MARDI GRAS 2011.
This initiative is to have Combat Veterans from the Mid-East conflicts
experience the thrill of a lifetime. They ride in a parade on MARDI GRAS
DAY (March 8th 2011) before an appreciative crowd of ONE MILLION PEOPLE.
We need and welcome donations of all amounts, either corporate, other
organizations or individuals.
Attendance for the meeting was Forty Two people, most of whom are shown
in the pictures except; Ed Gainey, Mykel Hawkeye, Jan Whidden and her
daughter Ann Dupree with grandchildren Katie and Nick.
