Our Fourth Quarter Meeting was on Saturday October 22nd 2016 at Sammy’s Gill in Praireville, LA. (it was originally scheduled for the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Firing Range which unfortunately was damaged by recent flooding). The meeting was opened by a Pledge of Allegiance, invocation, then a moment of silence for member WILLIE STEVENS who passed away September 4, 2016. Willie was twice elected as President of Chapter XXX and served as our Chaplain for many years. We will deeply miss Willie and always remember what a terrific person he was. We learned after the meeting that another member RUDOLPHO “RUDDY” VILLAFARRA had passed away on October 31st 2016. His health became bad then worse several years ago and he was not able to attend any meetings. He is well known to our members who served with him in the former LA NG Co D 20th SFGA (New Orleans detachment).
On a lighter note BOB MOREAU read a news article in today’s paper about The First Parachute Jump. “In 1797, French balloonist Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first parachute descent, landing safely from a height of about 3,000 feet over Paris”
The annual MARDI GRAS PROGRAM fund raising is underway now with the publication of our brochure HOST A HERO FOR MARDI GRAS 2017 (on February 28th). Copies were distributed and members encouraged to solicit donors (any amount is appreciated) for this self-sustaining event. We have plenty of copies if you need more contact BOB MOREAU, LLOUD STOUT, JIM ANTHONY or JOHN PERSSON (phone numbers are on the brochure).
FLASH ! A New Orleans TV station reported “GREEN BERET helps save woman and toddler from submerged dump truck”, [see photo below] on Friday October 21st 2016. JOSH BURNS dove into the water pulling the mother and baby to safety. For the full story logon www.timespicayune.com under NEWS type in SEARCH “JOSH BURNS”. A chapter member contacted JOSH to congratulate him and invited him to join the SFA - he’s filling out an application.
Guest Speaker was STANLEY JOHN WHIDDEN a Charter Member of Chapter XXX and former President in the early years who now lives in Virginia and is in Chapter XI. John gave the history of the origins of Chapter XXX. He also presented an unclassified overview of Rapid Equipment Force.
The meetings for 2017 will be JAN 28th (Livingston Sheriff’s Range), APR 22nd, JULY 22nd, and OCT 28th. Announcements are emailed 30 days prior and posted on our website. If you’re in the area give us a call and come visit.
MEMBERS PRESENT: JIM & MITZI, ERNIE, FRANK, RUSS, TED, TOM, DONALD, JIM & KATHY, BOB & JUDI, LESTER, TONY R., LLOYD & LUZSTELLA, and ART.
